Climbing Mount Kilimanjaro is not just about reaching the summit — it’s about choosing the path that feels right for you. Each official Kilimanjaro route has its own character: some are scenic and gradual, others steep and adventurous; some offer hut accommodation, others a true wilderness camping experience.
At Everyday Safaris, we’ve guided climbers on every route over many years, building on the legacy of our family’s mountaineering history at Babylon Lodge in Marangu. Our team knows what makes each route special — and how to help you pick the one that matches your fitness level, travel style, and goals.
One thing we always emphasize: the more days you spend on the mountain, the higher your summit success rate. Adding an extra acclimatization day can be the difference between turning back or standing proudly at Uhuru Peak, the “Roof of Africa.”
Marangu is Kilimanjaro’s most famous route, nicknamed the “Coca-Cola Route” because drinks were once sold at its huts. It’s the only trail where you sleep in dormitory-style huts, making it appealing for those who don’t want to camp.
The trail begins in lush rainforest, then rises through moorlands before reaching the lunar landscapes near the summit. While shorter than most routes, its 5-day itinerary allows little time for altitude adjustment, which lowers success rates. That’s why we recommend at least 6 days on this route.
Everyday Safaris tip:Marangu is great for school groups or climbers seeking comfort, but don’t underestimate the altitude — always add an extra day for acclimatization.

Nicknamed the “Whiskey Route” for its toughness compared to Marangu, Machame is one of the most scenic and popular routes on Kilimanjaro. It winds through dense rainforest, up onto theShira Plateau, across ridges, and over the dramatic Barranco Wall — one of the trek’s highlights.
The 7-day Machame itinerary follows the principle of “climb high, sleep low,” which helps acclimatization and gives climbers an excellent chance of success. The route is social too — you’ll meet climbers from around the world along the way.
Everyday Safaris tip: If you want both beauty and challenge, Machame is ideal. Our guides have found the 7-day version is the sweet spot for acclimatization and summit success.
For those who dream of stunning wilderness, Lemosho is the route we often recommend. Beginning on the western side of Kilimanjaro, it starts with peaceful rainforest trails where wildlife sightings are common. It then crosses the Shira Plateau, before joining the Machame trail on the southern circuit.Because of its length and gradual ascent, Lemosho offers excellent acclimatization and one of the highest success rates of all routes. Over 8 or 9 days, climbers have time to adjust and soak in the breathtaking variety of landscapes.
Everyday Safaris tip: If you have the time, Lemosho is worth every step. Many of our happiest climbers say this was the highlight of their trip to Tanzania.

Approaching Kilimanjaro from the northern side, near the Kenyan border, Rongai offers a quieter, less crowded experience. The trail is dry, gentle, and scenic, with wide views across the plains. It’s especially good during the rainy season, as it receives less rainfall than the southern routes.
Although not as steep as other routes, Rongai offers fewer opportunities for the “climb high, sleep low” principle, which is why we recommend at least 7 days for proper acclimatization.
Everyday Safaris tip: Rongai is perfect for climbers who value peace and quiet. It’s also a great choice for those climbing during the rainy months.
The Northern Circuit is Kilimanjaro’snewest and longest route, circling around the mountain for a full 360-degree experience. At a minimum of 9 days, it provides the best acclimatization profile and the highest summit success rate of any route.
It combines the scenic beauty of Lemosho with the quiet remoteness of the northern slopes, far from the busier trails. This makes it a favorite for climbers who have time to fully immerse themselves in the journey.
Everyday Safaris tip: If you want the best chance of success and a complete Kilimanjaro experience, the Northern Circuit is unmatched.

The Umbwe Route is the steepest, shortest, and most direct way up Kilimanjaro. With very little time for acclimatization, it has one of the lowest success rates. However, it offers dramatic ridge-line trekking and incredible views for those with the fitness and altitude experience to handle it.
Everyday Safaris tip: Umbwe is not for beginners. We recommend it only for experienced trekkers who have climbed at altitude before.
