MOUNT MERU · HIGH CAMP

Saddle Hut

Saddle Hut sits at about 3,570 metres on the saddle between Mount Meru and Little Meru. It is the high-altitude base where summit plans become immediate.

  • Altitude · ≈ 3,570 m
  • From Miriakamba · ≈ 8 km
  • Role · High camp
  • Next · Little Meru / summit
WHERE IT FITS

Saddle Hut Is Where the Mountain Becomes Serious

The climb from Miriakamba is shorter than summit day but steep and sustained. Vegetation thins, the crater opens and altitude becomes harder to ignore.

At Saddle, climbers eat, hydrate, monitor how they feel and prepare for Little Meru or the pre-dawn summit departure.

ON THE MOUNTAIN

A Shorter Day With a Bigger Altitude Gain

Climbers at Saddle Hut route sign

The route climbs through forest and heath before opening into more rugged volcanic terrain. The ascent is sustained, so the correct pace feels deliberately slow.

  • Expect thinner air to become more noticeable.
  • Keep drinking even when cool conditions reduce thirst.
  • Use arrival time for recovery rather than unnecessary activity.
WHY IT MATTERS

One Hut, Two Upper-Mountain Objectives

01

Little Meru

A short acclimatisation ascent can add useful altitude exposure and views.

02

Socialist Peak

The main summit sequence normally starts from Saddle in the night.

03

Recovery

Food, hydration, sleep and gear checks directly affect summit night.

ROUTE CONTEXT

How Saddle Hut Organises the Upper Mountain

01

Reach Saddle

Recover after the sustained climb from Miriakamba.

02

Little Meru

Optional acclimatisation outing when conditions allow.

03

Rest & prepare

Eat, hydrate, check layers, light and water.

04

Summit start

Depart before dawn toward Rhino Point and Socialist Peak.

MOUNTAIN STRATEGY

What Happens Before the Alarm Goes Off

Warm layers are arranged in order, the headlamp is checked, water is protected from cold, gloves are ready and the daypack is simplified. Follow the guide’s wake-up time and health assessment because weather, altitude response and trail conditions can change the summit plan.

Use your guide’s judgement, current weather and how the group is responding to altitude rather than forcing a fixed schedule.
PRACTICAL PLANNING

Saddle Hut Packing Priorities

01

Warm insulation

For colder evening and pre-dawn conditions.

02

Reliable headlamp

Summit movement begins in darkness.

03

Water & quick energy

Prepare both before trying to sleep.

PUT IT IN CONTEXT

The Two Huts Feel Completely Different

Miriakamba is lower, greener and more sheltered. Saddle is higher, colder, more exposed and directly tied to Little Meru and summit night. The shift between them is one of the strongest changes in the entire Momella Route experience.
