12-Day Kilimanjaro Climb and Tanzania Big Five Safari Adventure

12 Days

12-Day Kilimanjaro Climb and Tanzania Big Five Safari Adventure combines a professionally guided Mount Kilimanjaro climb with a northern Tanzania wildlife safari in one continuous itinerary. The mountain section follows the Lemosho Route, while the safari section is designed around a summit-focused Kilimanjaro climb followed by a five-day Big Five safari circuit.

This is a physically demanding journey because the safari begins soon after the mountain descent. Travelers should arrive well prepared for the climb and understand that summit success, wildlife sightings and seasonal events can never be guaranteed. Everyday Safaris adapts mountain and safari operations around safety, weather, trail conditions, wildlife movement and park regulations.

Why Combine Kilimanjaro and Safari?

The combination lets travelers experience two very different sides of Tanzania in one journey: a high-altitude expedition on Africa’s highest mountain followed by game drives across the northern safari circuit. After days of trekking through rainforest, moorland, alpine desert and the summit zone, the safari changes the pace completely and shifts the focus to wildlife, landscapes and comfortable lodge or camp stays.

Mountain Safety and Acclimatization

Altitude affects every traveler differently. Everyday Safaris uses guide-led pacing, daily health monitoring and route-specific acclimatization practices, but no itinerary can guarantee a successful summit. The lead guide can slow the group, adjust timing or stop a summit attempt when health or weather creates unacceptable risk. Suitable high-altitude trekking insurance is essential.

Safari Experience After the Climb

Safari routing is selected around the confirmed itinerary, road conditions and seasonal wildlife distribution. Wildlife is never staged, and no species, predator interaction, river crossing or migration event is guaranteed. The driver-guide can adjust game-drive emphasis when recent sightings or changing conditions make another area more productive.

Who Is This Combined Trip Best For?

This trip suits active travelers who want Kilimanjaro to remain the main physical challenge while also experiencing Tanzania’s wildlife parks in the same holiday. Because the safari follows soon after the climb, travelers should be comfortable with consecutive travel days and should tell Everyday Safaris about injuries, medical concerns or special recovery needs before departure.

Private and Tailor-Made Options

Private mountain arrangements, private safari vehicles, upgraded safari accommodation and route changes can be quoted subject to park rules and availability. The exact accommodation names, room categories, meal plans and transport arrangements are confirmed before payment.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is the Kilimanjaro summit guaranteed?

No. The itinerary is designed around a summit attempt, but altitude response, weather, pace and guide safety decisions determine whether a climber continues.

Will we definitely see the Big Five or Great Migration?

No. Wildlife moves naturally. The itinerary uses strong wildlife areas and experienced guides, but individual species and seasonal events cannot be guaranteed.

Is there a recovery day between Kilimanjaro and safari?

Not automatically in these fixed-duration combination products. The mountain descent returns travelers to lower altitude before the safari begins. An additional rest night in Arusha can be added to a tailor-made quotation if preferred.

Is there a fixed public price?

No fixed public price is included. The quotation depends on travel dates, group size, mountain route, safari accommodation level, park fees and any private upgrades.

Day 01 :
Lemosho Trailhead to Mti Mkubwa Camp

Trek through western rainforest to Mti Mkubwa Camp. The western Lemosho approach begins through a quieter montane rainforest, where the path climbs steadily beneath a dense canopy. Recent rain can make mud and exposed roots part of the day’s challenge, so guides emphasize controlled footing and an easy pace. Because the route begins relatively low, this stage gives the body a gradual introduction before the larger gains on the Shira Plateau. Mti Mkubwa, or Big Tree Camp, is reached in the forest zone, where the evening focuses on food, warm layers, hydration and the first health check.

Day 02 :
Mti Mkubwa to Shira 1 Camp

Leave the forest and climb through heath and moorland to Shira 1 Camp. The trail leaves dense forest and climbs into heath and moorland, where the western slopes of Kilimanjaro open dramatically. A sequence of ridges leads toward the edge of the Shira Plateau, with Kibo appearing ahead when cloud cover breaks. Altitude becomes more noticeable as the team approaches Shira 1 at roughly 3,500 m, so the guide encourages a slow rhythm and regular hydration. Once in camp, climbers rest, eat and prepare for the broader plateau crossing ahead.

Day 03 :
Shira 1 to Barranco Camp via Lava Tower

Cross the Shira Plateau and climb toward Lava Tower before descending to Barranco Camp. This is an important acclimatization stage. The route climbs toward Lava Tower at roughly 4,600 m, giving the body useful exposure to higher altitude before descending again. The guide keeps the pace deliberate and monitors headache, appetite, breathing and energy as the group gains height. Time at the high point is adjusted according to weather and individual condition. Descending to a lower sleeping area supports the climb-high, sleep-lower strategy and usually makes the evening feel more comfortable than the high point of the day.

Day 04 :
Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Climb the Barranco Wall and traverse the southern circuit to Karanga Camp. The day includes the Barranco Wall, a steep hands-on scramble rather than technical rock climbing. Guides manage spacing carefully through narrow sections and exposed-looking steps before the route opens onto the southern slopes. From the top, the trail crosses a sequence of valleys and ridges with dramatic views of Kibo and the southern glaciers when weather is clear. Karanga is an important recovery point before the summit approach, so the afternoon focuses on food, hydration, warm layers and another health assessment.

Day 05 :
Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Continue through alpine desert to Barafu Camp and prepare for summit night. Leaving the Karanga sector, the route climbs into a much drier alpine-desert environment where vegetation almost disappears. The higher the team moves, the more important a slow pace becomes, even when the distance is not great. Barafu is the main summit base on the southern routes, so arrival is focused on eating, drinking, preparing headlamps and insulated clothing, and resting. The guide reviews the summit plan, expected temperatures, turnaround rules and each climber’s condition before the overnight ascent.

Day 06 :
Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp

Climb overnight to Stella Point and Uhuru Peak when safe, then descend to Mweka Camp. The summit attempt normally begins late at night or around midnight. Headlamps mark a slow line up steep volcanic terrain toward the crater rim before the final approach to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 m. Reaching the summit depends on weather, pace and individual altitude response, and the lead guide can order a turnaround at any stage. After a brief summit stop, the team descends back through the high camp and continues much lower for recovery. The combination of ascent and long descent makes this the most physically and mentally demanding day of the expedition.

Day 07 :
Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Descend through rainforest and transfer back to Arusha. The final descent returns to richer vegetation as the trail drops into Kilimanjaro’s montane rainforest. Breathing usually becomes easier as altitude falls, but tired legs, roots and slippery ground still require concentration. The team stays together to Mweka Gate, where park exit procedures are completed and the mountain portion of the trip officially ends. After meeting the transfer vehicle, guests can change into dry travel clothes and return to Arusha or continue with a pre-arranged safari or Zanzibar extension.

Day 08 :
Private Tarangire Safari

After completing the Kilimanjaro section and returning to Arusha or the agreed lower-altitude base, meet the safari driver-guide and begin the wildlife phase of the journey. Meet your Everyday Safaris driver-guide in Arusha after breakfast and travel south-west toward Tarangire National Park. After entry formalities, begin the first game drive through landscapes shaped by ancient baobabs, seasonal swamps and the Tarangire River. The park is particularly well known for elephants, but wildlife movements change with rainfall and season, so the guide reads tracks, water sources and recent sightings rather than following a fixed circuit. Pause for a picnic or lodge lunch according to the booked program, then continue exploring until late afternoon. Leave the park or continue to the selected lodge area for dinner, a safari briefing and overnight rest.

Day 09 :
Private Tarangire to Serengeti Transfer

Depart the Tarangire or Karatu area early for the drive toward Serengeti National Park, passing through the northern Tanzania highlands and Ngorongoro Conservation Area. The day covers significant distance, but the changing landscapes from baobab country to volcanic highlands and open plains make the transfer part of the safari experience. After entering the Serengeti, begin game viewing on the way to camp rather than treating the final hours as a simple road transfer. Your guide adjusts stops according to wildlife and daylight, avoiding unrealistic promises about how much ground can be covered. Reach the lodge or tented camp in time for dinner and overnight.

Day 10 :
Private Full-Day Serengeti Safari

Spend a full day on game drives in Serengeti, with the schedule built around wildlife activity rather than a rigid mileage target. An early start can provide cooler conditions and strong predator activity, while later hours may reveal large herbivore herds moving between grazing and water. Your guide uses recent sightings, seasonal knowledge and quieter tracks to search for lions, cheetahs, leopards, elephants, giraffes, buffalo and plains game without crowding animals. Take a picnic lunch in the park or return to camp depending on the confirmed safari style. Continue through the afternoon and finish with a slow game drive back to the lodge or tented camp before dinner.

Day 11 :
Serengeti to Ngorongoro Highlands

Begin with a final morning game drive in the Serengeti, using the cooler hours to search for wildlife before leaving the plains. The route then travels toward the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, gradually moving from open savannah into volcanic highlands. Depending on the season, road conditions and lodge location, the guide may include additional game viewing around the southern Serengeti or conservation-area plains before climbing toward the crater rim. The day is intentionally flexible because wildlife can slow the journey in the best possible way. Arrive at the selected crater-rim, highland or Karatu lodge for dinner and an early night before the crater descent.

Day 12 :
Private Ngorongoro Crater Safari and Arusha

Descend into Ngorongoro Crater early, when temperatures are cooler and wildlife activity can be strong across the caldera floor. The crater supports a dense concentration of large mammals in a relatively contained landscape, including buffalo, zebra, wildebeest, gazelles, hippos and predators; black rhino may be seen but sightings are never guaranteed. Your driver-guide moves between grassland, marsh, woodland and lake-edge habitats while managing viewing time within conservation-area regulations. Stop for a picnic lunch at an approved area, then continue the game drive before climbing the crater wall. Transfer afterward to the selected highland, Karatu or onward lodge for dinner and overnight. Return privately to Arusha.
